Advances in desktop Linux are developing along two trend lines -- one for adoption and the other for innovation. The rate of adoption for Linux shows steady growth at a constant rate. However, technological advances can have an unpredictable impact on adoption -- and cause exponential growth. Analysts agree on the current rate of adoption within the enterprise and among consumers and predict a minor dent in market share. Some analysts forecast that now that Linux has surpassed Apple's market share, it will take a six percent share over the next two years.
Linux desktop OS has now come of age and is ready for prime time. Consider the value proposition for organizations: If a user's disk crashes, so long as the data in the home directory is backed up, the user can be up and running again on a new disk in less than 20 minutes. This is simply not possible with Microsoft Windows. Even in the case of a catastrophic hard disk failure, the user should be able to access and edit their data by booting directly off a Linux desktop CD, again this is not possible with Microsoft Windows.
Linux desktop OS now offers more functionality than can be realised from a standard Microsoft Windows XP install. The suite of Office programs bundled with Linux desktop OS is not only compatible with and similar in look and feel to use as MS Office but can be free of any licencing costs.
Linux desktop OS requires less CPU power, memory and disk space to provide the same functionality as MS Windows XP with Office XP. This can easily be realised in terms of cost of ownership, reduced hardware replacement costs, alongside increased reliability and security.
